This is an easy 30 minute walking track (one way), which visits the grave sites of those who died in one of the worst shipwrecks in New Zealand’s maritime history.
Approximately 140 people drowned when the SS Wairarapa hit rocks near Miners Head on 29 October 1894. While most of the dead were taken back to Auckland, others remained buried on Great Barrier Island in two small cemeteries.
This track visits the Tapuwai site, accessed from the road’s end at Whangapoua beach. Wander along this beautiful beach to Tapuwai point, where the grave sites are surrounded by white picket fences.
