Wairarapa Graves Walking Track- Onepoto Site

This is an easy 15 minute walking track (one way), which visits the grave sites of those who died in one of the worst shipwrecks in New Zealand’s maritime history.

Approximately 140 people drowned when the SS Wairarapa hit rocks near Miners Head on 29 October 1894. While most of the dead were taken back to Auckland, others remained buried on Great Barrier Island in two small cemeteries.

This track visits the Onepoto site, accessed from the end of Kawa road in Katherine Bay. From here, follow the signpost and wander along the beach (or boulder hop) until you reach the graves.
