The Aotea Track loops the central mountainous area of Great Barrier Island (Aotea). The track is a network of easy walking tracks, steep climbs, stairways and bridges, offering a range of spectacular landscapes and rich history. Experience the Kaitoke Hot Springs, Windy Canyon lookout and the Kaiaraara driving dam. Panoramic views are plentiful, as most of the track follows the central ridge of the island.
The new Mt Heale Hut adds to the existing Great Barrier Island track network, creating a multi-day tramping experience. You can spend one night at the Mt Heale Hut, or make it a 3 day experience by staying at the Kaiaraara Hut as well. Tramping boots are recommended and you will need to provide your own food, drink and other necessary equipment.
