The Great Barrier is the perfect getaway for a bunch of mates wanting to relax and have a bit of fun.
This long weekend getaway starts on a Friday morning, giving you enough time to travel to and from the Barrier by ferry. Alternatively, you could choose to fly and be there even sooner. If there’s room, pack your gear for fishing, diving, hunting, surfing, biking and snorkelling, and be sure to book your accommodation before your go.
Check in 60 minutes prior to your departure from Wynyard Quarter, Auckland City, ready for an 8am departure. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the ferry, a great chance to swap fishing stories over a coffee from the cafe and bar before your arrival at Tryphena, Great Barrier Island at 12:30pm.
Head to your accommodation and unload before hitting the beach. If you’ve brought your boards, head to Medlands or Awana Beach for the island’s best surf. If you’re not a surfer, just enjoy the expanse of the beach, with a frisbee or soccer ball.
Head out early on one of the island’s popular fishing charters to discover some of the Barrier’s best kept fishing spots. Throw in your dive gear as well to add a cray to the dinner table, or your snorkeling gear to collect a few mussels. Head back in the evening for a cook up of all your kaimoana, and invite a few locals along as well, to add some hilarity to the dinner conversation.
Hit the bush for a hunting adventure (there’s plenty of rabbits, ducks and wild pigs on the island), checking in with Fish and Game to make sure you know what’s in season. Or, if you’d prefer, grab your mountain bike (or hire one on the island from Paradise Bikes) and hit the many mountain bike trails throughout the island.
Get back to your accommodation in time to finish off yesterday’s leftovers for lunch, and then grab a coffee at Okiwi (Cafe Motu), Claris (Claris Texas Cafe), or Tryphena (Wild Rose) on your way back to Tryphena wharf for your return sailing to Auckland. Departure is at 3pm, with arrival back in Auckland City at 7.30pm.
